The emergence of C.G. Jung’s Red Book from years of storage in a Swiss bank vault and its recent publication has re-kindled interest in the therapeutic value of actively engaging with the spontaneous imagination. This evening seminar will introduce the method of Active Imagination, consider its history and theory in Jung, its relation with making art, and offer examples from practice for scrutiny and discussion. Questions to be addressed are: Isn’t it dangerous inviting demons and opening wounds? What is the difference between hearing the voices of “inner” figures and auditory hallucinations? Can images be trusted? Does the contemporary imagination itself needs therapy? Are there ways of restoring imagination to its beneficent strength?

The seminar will be held at Pacifica Graduate Institute’s Ladera Lane Campus at 801 Ladera Lane, Santa Barbara, CA 93108. Located on 35 acres in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this residential retreat center provides a unique and peaceful environment for these events. Major airlines provide service into the Los Angeles International Airport located 90 miles south of Santa Barbara and into the Santa Barbara Municipal Airport, approximately 18 miles from the Campus. No refunds on your registration fee will be made after that time. For refund on accommodations at the Ladera Lane Campus, cancellation with full refund will be accepted up to 5 days before the event. 3 hours of continuing education credit is available for RNs through the California Board of Registered Nurses (provider #CEP 7177), for MFTs and LCSWs (provider #PCE 2278) through the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, and for National Certified Counselors (provider #5436), through the National Board of Certified Counselors.
