team5Dr. Stephen Aizenstat , Ph.D., is the founding president of Pacifica Graduate Institute. Dr. Aizenstat is a licensed Clinical Psychologist, Marriage Family Therapist, and a credentialed public schools teacher. He is also a member of the APA. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology  from Fielding Institute in 1982 and his Masters of Education from the University of California in 1975.  His areas of emphasis include depth psychology, dream research, and imaginal and archetypal psychology.
Dr. Aizenstat’s original research centers on a psychodynamic process of “tending the living image,” particularly in the context of dreamwork. Steve Aizenstat has conducted dreamwork seminars for over 25 years throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. 
His organizational and educational consulting has included Systemetrics of McGraw Hill Inc., the New York Open Center, Santa Barbara Mental Health Services, Santa Barbara Middle School, and various other corporate organizations, social service agencies, and school systems.

 

 

team4Dr. Dan Hocoy Ph.D.,graduated from an APA-accredited 
Clinical Ph.D. program and has worked previously on (successful)
APA applications. He knows the importance of APA for Pacifica
and is probably working on the application right now!.

 

 

 

 

team3Dr. Gary Groth-Marnat Ph.D., is a scholar, clinician, and teacher. As a scholar he has published over 130 articles/chapters/books, has continually maintained an active private practice in clinical neuropsychology, and has taught in graduate psychology programs in the United States and Australia.  He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 12), Fellow of the Society for Personality Assessment, Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology, Diplomate of the American Board of Assessment Psychology, recipient of the prizewinning case study for the International Forum of Social Sciences in Health, and the recipient of the Merle Green Robertson Service to Society Award.

 

 

team4 Dr. Cindy Carter Ph.D., has been an educator for over 25 years.  Her academic training includes degrees in Liberal Arts, Biology and Chemistry, Educational Psychology, and Clinical Psychology.  She carries a Secondary Education Teaching Credential, is a Registered Nurse, and a Psychotherapist in private practice.  Prior to assuming the role of Academic Dean several years ago, Cindy served for three years as Pacifica’s Academic Coordinator, and has been closely involved in Pacifica’s accreditation processes.
Cindy's teaching spans elementary, secondary, undergraduate, and graduate levels, as well as clinical settings.  During the past 15 years, the range of graduate and undergraduate level psychology courses she offered include: Abnormal Psychology, Psychological Assessment; Theoretical Orientations I and II, Clinical Practicum I and II, Group Psychology, Human Sexuality, Human Development, Clinical Practice I, II, and III, and Process of Psychotherapy I, II, and III. 

 

 

team5Dr. Allen Bishop Ph.D., came to Pacifica in 1995 and has served as Chair of the Department for over nine years. In addition, he served as the WASC Accreditation Liaison Officer for 10 years.  Allen has worked steadfastly over the last seven years to promote our application for APA accreditation. 
Dr. Bishop maintains a private practice as a certified psychoanalyst and licensed psychologist.

 

 

 

team6Laura S. Grillo, Ph.D. is Core Faculty in the Mythological Studies Program at Pacifica Graduate Institute, and has served for three years on Pacifica’s WASC Steering Committee that supervises the processes of institutional evaluation and accreditation.  She earned her Ph.D. in History of Religions from the University of Chicago, specializing in contemporary indigenous West African religions.  She also holds a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary and an A.B. from Brown University in Religious Studies and Psychology.  She is a published author of numerous academic articles of comparative religious studies for encyclopedias, scholarly journals and chapters for anthologies.  In addition, she has translated work in her field from French to English.  Dr. Grillo’s research on West African divination won her grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Academy of Religion and the West Africa Research Association.  She is the author of a memoir about her life in Ivory Coast and her return there to investigate divination and destiny.  In support of this effort she won six Writers’ Residency Fellowship awards for creative non-fiction at artist colonies: three from The Ragdale Foundation, and three from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

 

team4Dr. Jim Broderick Ph.D.,became Chair of the Clinical PhD Program in 2008. Dr. Broderick is a licensed clinical psychologist. He served as Director of Mental Health for twenty years in two California counties, Shasta and Santa Barbara. He has been actively involved in mental health and alcohol and drug treatment for nearly forty years. He is a passionate advocate for quality services for individuals with serious mental illness. His academic interests include phenomenology, existentialism, critical theory, and evidence-based psychotherapy. His major therapeutic interests include depth-oriented Brief Therapy and Sand Tray Therapy with a Jungian orientation.
